Power System Design and Management
System Sizing: Provisioning of dedicated, protected power lines (equipped with circuit breakers and residual current devices) running from the main electrical panel to the rack.
UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) Installation: Installing battery-backed systems within the rack to ensure equipment remains powered during outages and to filter voltage fluctuations.
PDU (Power Distribution Unit) Mounting: Installing rack-mounted power strips (often "smart" units capable of remote monitoring) to power switches, routers, and servers.
Redundancy: Connecting dual power supplies (where present on devices such as routers or core switches) to two separate PDUs and/or UPS units
Physical Cable Management
Installation and Termination: Routing network cables from the building into the rack and terminating them on patch panels. As previously mentioned, Cat 6A is the standard for new corporate installations today (avoiding the older Cat 5e).
Data/Power Separation: Positioning power cables separately from copper data cables (e.g., power on the left, data on the right) to prevent electromagnetic interference.
Routing: Using vertical and horizontal cable organizers (cable managers) to avoid the "spaghetti cable" effect and ensure proper airflow for cooling.
Installation of Active Equipment (Hardware Mounting)
Switch and Router Mounting: Screw-mounting of network devices for LAN distribution and Internet connectivity.
Security Device Installation: Mounting of hardware firewalls or IDS/IPS probes. Note: It is precisely on these devices (or on switch monitoring ports, known as SPAN ports) that the "network listening" functions mentioned earlier are configured, enabling the detection of threats in a legal and authorized manner.
Cloud Integration Devices: Installation of any physical gateways or hybrid devices connecting the local network to AWS or Azure infrastructures.
Cross-Connection and Patching
Patch Cord Connection: Using short network cables (patch cords) to connect switch ports to patch panels.
Fiber Optic Management: Connecting fiber optic enclosures to switches via SFP modules (transceivers) for high-speed links (e.g., uplinks to providers or connections between racks).
Labeling: Rigorous labeling of every cable at both the switch and panel ends.
Testing, Physical Security, and Documentation
Instrument-based Certification: Testing all copper and fiber links using specialized tools (e.g., Fluke) to certify compliance with standards (e.g., ensuring Cat 6A cabling actually supports 10Gbps speeds without errors).
Environmental and Access Control: Installation of temperature/humidity sensors and physical rack locks to prevent tampering (a first line of defense for cybersecurity).
Documentation Preparation: Creation of network diagrams and patching maps. This documentation is vital for the previously mentioned remote and on-site help-desk services, as it enables technicians to guide the client or intervene precisely and effectively in the event of a failure.
